2011 Colony Christmas Triathlon Results

Greater Palmer Chamber of Commerce and Peak Fitness present the
12th Annual Colony Christmas Triathlon

Sunday, December 11, 2011   Bike 10K – Run 5K – Swim 500M

We had a great Triathlon on Sunday, prayers do get answered. I know this because the weather held out for the length of the event then instantly got unbearable after the last runners came in (I prayed for that window of time last night). The 12th Annual Colony Christmas Triathlon was hosted by Peak Fitness and was co-sponsored by Mat-Su Health Foundation & Peak Fitness.

This event is in conjunction with the Palmer Chamber of Commerce Colony Christmas celebration.

The day was warm, somewhere in the high 30's for the start of the race. Total opposite from last year when it was -6 below zero.

The gun went off at 11:00 am, and 62 very exuberant athletes sped out of the parking lot at Peak Fitness on their trusty bikes. They biked 10K, ran 5K, then swam 500 meters at the Palmer Pool.

There are Men's, Woman's, and Team categories. We had a great group of participants, but then we always do. They come from all over the Valley and this year some as far away as Kenai and Kasilof. The numbers were down this year I would imagine because of the miserable driving conditions. But the uniqueness of the race is, that no matter the weather the triathlon will go on.

We had tons of volunteers, ok maybe not tons, but lots. To pull off an event such as this you can imagine it takes a fair amount of coordination and planning, but most of all it take volunteers. They help in the registration, traffic safety, timing swimmers, timing the bike/run portion, and many weeks ahead of the event, lots of planning.

SO THIS IS A HUGE THANK YOU TO EACH AND EVERY VOLUNTEER AND PEAK STAFF MEMBER THAT HELPED IN ANYWAY TO MAKE THIS TRIATHLON A SUCCESS!  To many to name, but you and I know who you are.

The donations for door prizes from our local businesses were much appreciated, Backcountry Bikes, Active Soles, Vagabond Blues, Fred Meyer, Peak Fitness

And a big thank you to Mat-Su Health Foundation for their generous continued support of community sports events such as this. Thanks to the Greater Palmer Chamber of Commerce for their continued support as well.

To the Mat-Su Borough road maintenance crew & City of Palmer road maintenance crew, your awesome the roads and bike trails were great.

And last but not least thank you Palmer pool staff nobody drowned at the pool.

See you all next year at the 13th Annual Colony Christmas Triathlon,

Ann Riggs

Course     (Subject to change, maps available at Peak Fitness front desk on race day)
Start time is 11:00 AM at Peak Fitness on Sunday, December 11.  The bike leg is a 10K that begins at Peak Fitness and will proceed out on the shoulder of the Palmer-Wasilla Hwy, turning around at 49th State St. and returning back on the bike trail. The course is hilly and fat tires are recommended.  On the return, bikers will turn at Hemmer, continue past Peak Fitness, take a right on Arctic and enter the back entrance to Palmer High School, and continue through parking lot to the Pool.  Cyclists will ride on the shoulder of the highway in the direction of traffic.  The relatively flat run begins at Palmer Pool, making a clockwise circle from Arctic to Glenn Highway to Palmer-Wasilla, to Hemmer, and back to the pool via Arctic pool entrance.  The swim is at the Palmer Pool, 10 laps equal to 500 meters.  Upon arriving at the pool, the clock will stop for participants to change clothes and shower before entering the pool.  Clock starts again when participants enter the swim lane, the transition is not timed.  Pool typically opens at 10:30 am, team swimmers will start at 11:00 am in the pool.
